Food - A Sustainable Future

August 22, 2018

This week former Unilever Foods North America VP, and new Ben and Jerries CEO - Matthew McCarthy - stated: “if you want to be in the food industry, you have to be responsible for your impact on the world”. This sentiment is echoed throughout the Unilever organisation and has clearly had an effect on the way McCarthy and many others view the food industry’s role in the global community. McCarthy embodies the recent surge in wellness and corporate responsibility that many top businesses found their values on, in fact, Unilever itself has a strong track record of not cutting corners and looking to ensure all areas of the business are sustainable and ethical.

McCarthy himself has already brought out a low-calorie Ben and Jerry's range – looking to promote healthy eating and reduced sugar intake for fans of inherently unhealthy ice cream products. Whilst at Unilever McCarthy aimed to better the food ecosystem – Unilever’s Hellmann’s Mayonaise (USA’s most purchased condiment) was forced to go ‘cage free’ for the production of eggs by 2020, an aim achieved by the end of 2017. McCarthy supported local farmers and encouraged consumers to buy sustainably through artisanal products - improving the local economy.

It is not just Unilever, McCarthy and now Ben and Jerry's who are taking their responsible food future more seriously. Nestle, Elior, Aramak, and Ikea alongside many other companies have combined to form the Global Coalition for Animal Welfare (GCAW). These companies aim to drive the standards of food production and advance the global welfare standard of animals in the food supply chain.

It is a growing trend to see large companies acting on their corporate responsibility to people and the environment, and it is a key shared value of Healthy Nibbles to do the same.
