Yesterday was World Suicide Prevention Day, the very fact such a day exists shows the deep-rooted problems we as a society face in our handling of mental health-related issues. There is no doubt that our understanding of mental health has improved drastically in recent years, however, there is also no doubt that there is a huge stigma still attached to the admission of mental health issues. Recently sports teams and social media pages such as Harlequins Rugby and TheLadBible have promoted campaigns such as ‘U ok Mate’ and ‘Man of More Words’ in a bid to raise the issue of mental health and reduce the number of suicides we see in the UK.
However, in a startling report from the charity Mind, shared by the BBC today, poor mental health in the workplace is ‘widespread’. They stated that 50% of people (44,000 of which took part in the study) suffer from poor mental health. Furthermore, they found that less than half would be willing to talk to their boss about their problems, due to stigma, fear and job insecurity. These figures, therefore, point out that around 25% of the UK’s workforce has previously or is currently struggling with mental health and unable to speak to their boss about it.
More alarmingly, Mind states that over 300,000 jobs per year are lost due to mental health issues and the Institute of Directors has previously found that only one in five firms offered mental health training for managers.
