Mental Health Issues 'Widespread' In The Workplace

September 11, 2018

Yesterday was World Suicide Prevention Day, the very fact such a day exists shows the deep-rooted problems we as a society face in our handling of mental health-related issues. There is no doubt that our understanding of mental health has improved drastically in recent years, however, there is also no doubt that there is a huge stigma still attached to the admission of mental health issues. Recently sports teams and social media pages such as Harlequins Rugby and TheLadBible have promoted campaigns such as ‘U ok Mate’ and ‘Man of More Words’ in a bid to raise the issue of mental health and reduce the number of suicides we see in the UK.

However, in a startling report from the charity Mind, shared by the BBC today, poor mental health in the workplace is ‘widespread’. They stated that 50% of people (44,000 of which took part in the study) suffer from poor mental health. Furthermore, they found that less than half would be willing to talk to their boss about their problems, due to stigma, fear and job insecurity. These figures, therefore, point out that around 25% of the UK’s workforce has previously or is currently struggling with mental health and unable to speak to their boss about it.

More alarmingly, Mind states that over 300,000 jobs per year are lost due to mental health issues and the Institute of Directors has previously found that only one in five firms offered mental health training for managers.

At Healthy Nibbles, we feel that wellbeing and mental health is one of the biggest challenges affecting people in society. The study from Mind and the clear lack of understanding of how to talk about and deal with mental health issues is also apparent. The importance of improving these practices is reflected in this quote from the World Health Organisation “The workplace directly influences the physical, mental, economic and social well-being of workers and in turn the health of their families, communities, and society”. Workplace health impacts on individuals, their families, and everyone around them

Furthermore, in a study by Nuffield Health found that “87% of finance & HR Directors in UK companies with more than 1000 employees indicate that health and wellbeing are being discussed at board level and 41% viewed it as a strategic priority.”. This is where we feel that Healthy Nibbles can make a difference. Given nutrition and the notion that a business is looking after its employees’ health is a key way to improving mental health and productivity in the workplace, we offer a market leading range of healthy snacking solutions that enable healthy choices. Our supplier’s products are nutritionally vetted to ensure they are ‘healthy’ and not just masquerading as a health product, whilst being packed with sugar, while our vending and white box solutions have been lauded by some of the UK’s biggest companies such as Three Mobile and the BBC.
