National Wellness Week – How Healthy Nibbles Can Help

In conjunction with SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) and their ‘recovery month’, the third week of September is known worldwide, but particularly in the USA, as ‘national wellness week’. The focus on wellness for that week of the year has migrated to the UK and many businesses, organisations and individuals have begun to prioritise and promote wellness for this period of time. The week was launched to ‘inspire individuals and communities to incorporate the Eight Dimensions of Wellness into their lives’. These Eight dimensions include;

 

  • EMOTIONAL—Coping effectively with life and creating satisfying relationships
  • FINANCIAL—Satisfaction with current and future financial situations
  • SOCIAL—Developing a sense of connection, belonging, and a well-developed support system
  • SPIRITUAL—Expanding our sense of purpose and meaning in life
  • OCCUPATIONAL—Personal satisfaction and enrichment derived from one’s work
  • PHYSICAL—Recognizing the need for physical activity, diet, sleep, and nutrition
  • INTELLECTUAL—Recognizing creative abilities and finding ways to expand knowledge and skills
  • ENVIRONMENTAL—Good health by occupying pleasant, stimulating environments that support well-being

 

Wellness has quite rightly become a priority for businesses and even governments, given that physical illness such as diabetes, obesity, and heart disease are still on the rise, whilst mental health issues also contributing to early death and even suicide. SAMHSA state “Wellness is especially important for people with behavioural health conditions because it directly relates to their quality of life and longevity” – the sad truth is people will mental health issues are more likely to suffer from physical diseases such as obesity and their life expectancy is thus reduced. If businesses and individuals – even for one week aware make wellness and wellbeing a priority then the awareness of wellbeing and its importance grows, and general health is able to be in the spotlight.

 

Ensuring that employees are happy and supported in the workplace is crucial to creating a positive working environment. Furthermore, facilitating healthy choices by providing healthier food options at work can lead to improvement in at least five of the eight dimensions SAMHSA states contribute to wellness.
