What is Employee Wellness
Wellness and specifically ‘employee wellness’ is the newest and arguably most important phrase in HR in the modern workplace. It can be referred to as corporate or even workplace wellness, but the premise is still the same – to provide employees with a wellness programme in order to support and develop their health and lifestyle. Wellness programmes have become an important part of an overall employee experience aimed at reducing health care costs and the impact of absenteeism for companies, whilst increasing productivity, boosting morale and reducing stress for staff.
The increase in wellness programmes is a result of a number of factors, not least; the newfound research and awareness around health, and legislative factors such as the Government’s Thriving at Work report (2017) by Stevenson and Farmer. Interestingly research into health and wellness alongside the government report have almost identical findings. Wellness in the workplace leads to increased productivity and therefore efficiency for the company itself, whilst increasing mental and physical health of employees.
Stevenson and Farmer report – mental health
Stevenson and Farmer’s report identified some alarming data, particularly in relation to mental health. Over 300,000 people per year lose their jobs due to mental health conditions, whilst the total cost to the country of poor mental health is between £73 billion and £97 billion each year. Furthermore, unsurprisingly people with poor mental health are likely to need time off work to recover - this costs employers between £33 billion and £42 billion each year.
These statistics – away from the clear and obvious physical benefits of wellness programmes – show that alongside wellness being the right thing to do, investing in the mental health of employees can save the UK economy billions.
